Make a DIY DSLR Video Viewfinder on the Cheap

Adam  If you’re enjoying an HD video-enabled DSLR camera, you’ve probably found that one of the drawbacks is trying to see the LCD screen in sunlight. With photos you could use the viewfinder, but you can’t with video. Companies like Zacuto have solved this problem with a $395 viewfinder that attaches to your LCD screen to provide you with an eyepiece. If $4 sounds a bit more within your price range, you may want to make one of these DIY viewfinders instead.

The video above, by Frugal Film Maker, takes you through the whole process but here’s an overview of what you’re going to need:

  • A container of some kind that can be used for the body of the viewfinder.
  • A magnifying glass
  • Rubberbands or hair ties
  • Old headphone padding
  • Hot glue (meaning you’ll need a glue gun and glue sticks)
  • Spray paint for plastic (not just any spray paint!)

Put it all together and you’ll have a DIY video viewfinder. For more specific instructions, hit up the Instructables post or check out the video above.
